Social media these days gives one freedom to express ones opinion about issues and most times many people say things because it’s their opinion not minding if it’s offensive to other people and such is the case of Dencia, the controversial Whitencious boss who in her Snapchat post stated that being called a ‘bastard’ isn’t an insult, but a fact.
Reprudencia Sonkey, known by her stage name Dencia, is a singer, an entrepreneur, fashion designer, and philanthropist. She was born in 26 March 1988 in Cameroon. She started in the industry being featured in music videos of artists, like Chris Brown, 50 Cent, Lady Gaga, and Ludacris. Dencia released her first single “Beri Beri” in 2011.
Dencia who described herself as the President of the bastard club, disclosed that found out that grandmother wasn’t her mother’s mom after an uncle she took as a brother called her a bastard at 16. She further advised couples not to have kids out of wedlock.
She wrote;
Asking 4 myself, why do people get mad at this word when it’s actually facts. As the President of the bastard club, y’all need to get out ur feelings. Don’t have kids out of wedlock & bastard kids just take ur B it’s not an insult
In the U.S., Dencia studied at Santa Monica College, Pierce College, USC and the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. As a designer, she has created looks for artists like Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Christina Milian, and Lil’ Mama, and is known for her own fashion statements and appearances on red carpets at the Billboard Music Awards, the Grammys, and the American Music Awards.
Recall that few weeks ago, Dencia and Blac Chyna was in Nigeria for the lunch of her bleaching cream which brough so many outrage and social media reactions.
In 2014, Dencia launched her skincare line, Whitenicious, infamously including a skin bleaching cream. with Cameroonian singer Dencia—Whitenicious x Blac Chyna Diamond Illuminating & Lightening Cream—and the internet has been on fire since.
Although the controversy surrounding Dencia and her brand Whitenicious has been on everyone’s radar for over 4 years now, the outrage surrounding this new money bag venture for both ladies (each jar costs $250 according to TMZ) isn’t surprising, but disheartening.
Skin bleaching, or skin whitening, is a phenomena that stems from the impact colonialism had not just on the African continent, but also in the Caribbean and Asia. The colonial powers were adamant on stripping our countries of our resources, but also stripping our pride as a people by equating social status and social mobility to how light (rather, white) one’s skin is. Even until today, these skin lightening brands still advertise and capitalize on the colorism dynamic and inherited low self-esteem.
